Did you know you can’t actually be your own lactation consultant? As a Speech Language Pathologist and an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, I believed I had it all figured out when I welcomed my first child...and boy was I wrong!
All three of my babies were born with varying degrees of tongue ties, resulting in significant nipple damage and feeding difficulty. At first, it felt like a never ending cycle of attempting to latch, then pumping; supplementing via finger feeding, cup feeding, and bottle feeding; tongue tie releases; post-frenectomy oral motor exercises and stretches; nipple care; and frequent weight check ups. I will never forget the feeling of overcoming these challenges and redefining our breastfeeding goals along the way so we could enjoy a positive feeding relationship.
After the challenges I experienced breastfeeding my own children, and witnessing other families struggle with a lack of feeding support, I knew what I had to do. I began my journey to become an IBCLC with clear goals in mind; to help parents get feeding off to a good start, feel confident with their feeding plan, and meet their feeding goals. It still brings me so much joy to see how empowered and confident parents feel with the right education and support!
I just finished breastfeeding my 18 month old
...and am enjoying the ups and downs of the rollercoaster ride that is parenthood.
